Well I am just another old fart on here, now I was National Serviceman who had no wish at to be Serviceman in any shape or form who spent two years being chased around and shot at for half the pay of Regular soldier.
I was originally sent to Maidstone to the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment and our Cadre was to be shipped of the Bahamas as the Embassy Guard, well if we had to go any where then that would do for two years. Well all those on other cadres thought this was a bit rich and only regular soldiers should be selected for this, well the CO thought that this would be good idea and we were all asked to sign on, well from remarks he got he soon found that this idea did not go down well and we shipped off to Germany to patrol the eastern borders of Germany well in mid winter that is not a lot of fun. Well a notice came around for any one that wanted to be a paratrooper, well any thing would be better than this so of I went to Aldershot. Well I sailed through the P course then off to Abingdon did the jumps, next thing was I was marched of to a troopship and was on my way to Cyprus, then off to the Suez invasion. while I was with with the maroon machine we got to France, Algiers, Libya, Palestine, Israel, Belgium, Holland, Malta, and a host of other places that I can barely remember through and alcoholic haze
